1999 CHAIR BASEBALL WORLD SERIES

SERIES EVEN AT ONE AFTER FRIDAY

August 20th - The first day of the 1999 Chair baseball world series determined that the two teams are very evenly matched. The Western team is made up of Tony Cork, Patrick Cork, and Ryan Tomlinson while the East has Chris Cork, Greg Howard and Josh Williamson and Dustin Waldrop platooning. In game 1, a strong wind out to right field made it difficult for the fielders, and aided the only lefthanded hitter in the series - Josh Williamson. Williamson sparked a 6-run 4th inning explosion by the East that gave them a 6-0 lead. Josh Williamson homered three times in the inning off Tony Cork and Chris Cork added a solo shot. The West fought back immediately scoring 4 runs in the bottom of the 4th inning. Williamson added two more solo shots in the later innings and a late charge by the West came up just short as they fell 8-7. Greg Howard picked up the win going 9 innings and allowing 7 runs. Tony Cork took the loss giving up 7 earned runs in 9 innings.

EAST - Greg Howard 4-14, (2)1B,(2)3B, 2R...Josh Williamson 5-13, 5HR, 7RBI, 5R...Chris Cork 2-13, 3B, HR, RBI, R

WEST - Tony Cork 6-13, (2)1B, (2)2B, 2HR, 4 RBI, 2R ...Patrick Cork 4-13, 2B, 3HR, 3 RBI, 4R ...Ryan Tomlinson 2-13, (2)1B, R.

Game two the pressure was solely on the Western squad who could not allow a two-game sweep on their home turf. They sent Patrick Cork to the hill and despite getting only 7 hits on the game, they were able to win 9-5. They scored two times in each of the first two innings and added three more runs later as they held off the East. Patrick Cork pitched a strong game to pick up the win by going 9 innings and striking out 11. Cork gave up a 3-run bomb to brother Chris in the 6th inning which was later followed by a Williamson homer, but allowed only one other run in the game. Greg Howard took the loss by giving up five runs in five innings on just five hits. Of the 10 Western players to reach base in the game, 9 of them scored.

WEST - Tony Cork 3-12, 1B, 2HR, 4RBI, 4R. . . Patrick Cork 4-11, 4HR, 5 RBI, 5R. . . Ryan Tomlinson 0-11

Games 3, 4, and 5 are scheduled to take place on Saturday starting at 10:05 a.m. Starting pitchers have not yet been determined, however each team will most likely throw all three pitchers on the day.

WEST TAKES 3-2 ADVANTAGE HEADING INTO SUNDAY

August 21st - Saturday featured the 3 huge games that had the East as the home team. In game one, the East jumped out quickly to a 3-0 lead on 3 unearned runs against Ryan Tomlinson. They added another run in the fourth and two more in sixth on a Josh Williamson homerun-his third of the game. Down 6-1 after 6 innings, the West rallied behind Patrick Cork's 3-run homerun that cut the lead to 6-4. Another two-run homer by Patrick in the 8th tied the game at 6 heading into the bottom of the 8th inning. Greg Howard became the unlikely hero for the East by hitting his first, and only, homerun of the series into right center field to give his team the 7-6 lead which they would hold for the win. Josh Williamson picked up the win pitching 9 innings and allowing 6 runs on 8 hits. Tomlinson took the loss giving up 7 runs (4 earned) on the day.

WEST - Tony Cork 1-13, 1B, R . . Patrick Cork 4-12, 1B, 3HR, 6RBI, 4R . . Ryan Tomlinson 3-12, (3)1B, R

EAST - Greg Howard 3-14 (2)1B, HR, RBI, R . . Josh Williamson 6-13, (3)1B, 3HR, 5RBI, 4R. . Chris Cork 5-13, (3)1B, 2B, HR, RBI, 2R

For the pivotal game 4, the West sent staff ace Tony Cork to the mound. Cork was hit hard in the opening game of the series, but was masterful in his second start throwing a complete game and allowing just 2 runs on 6 hits. Josh Williamson took the loss pitching 5 innings and giving up 4 runs. The West jumped out to an early 4-0 lead on a two run homer by Tony Cork and another by Patrick Cork. Tony finished the game with 3 homeruns and a career high 5 RBI as well as the victory on the mound. The 7-2 victory brought the series even at two games apiece.

WEST - Tony Cork 6-13 (3)1B, 3HR, 5RBI, 4R. . Patrick Cork 4-13, (3)1B, HR, 2RBI, 2R. . Ryan Tomlinson 1-13, 1B, R

EAST - Greg Howard 2-12 (2)1B. . Josh Williamson 2-11, 2HR, 2RBI, 2R. . Chris Cork 2-11, 1B, 3B

Game 5 was a classic battle and was arguably one of the best games in chair baseball history. Tony Cork took the hill for the West for his third start in two days and faced Greg Howard. The West went ahead 1-0 on a solo homerun by Patrick Cork in the second inning, but fell behind 3-1 after a 2-run Dustin Waldrop homer and a solo shot from Chris Cork. The West battled back and added three runs in the fifth and 2 more in the sixth to push their lead to 6-3. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, a crucial error brought Dustin Waldrop to the plate with two men on. Waldrop unloaded on a pitch to right field that tied the game at 6. Tony Cork was relieved by Patrick who would now battle Waldrop in a late inning pitching duel. Each team threatened with deep fly ball outs in the next few innings, but the game wasn't decided until the eleventh when Patrick Cork hit his second homerun of the game - a 3 run shot - that gave the West a 9-6 lead. The East did not die though and loaded the bases in the bottom of the 11th, but Patrick got Waldrop to strike out and Howard to ground out to give the West a 9-6 victory and a 3-2 lead in the series. Patrick picked up the win going 4 1/3 innings giving up no runs on just 4 hits while striking out 5. Five outfield assists for the East were not enough as they will have to sweep the West on the road on Sunday to win the series.

WEST - Tony Cork 4-17, (2)1B, 2HR, 4RBI, 4R. . Patrick Cork 7-16, (5)1B, 2HR, 5RBI, 4R. . Ryan Tomlinson 4-16, (4)1B, R

EAST - Greg Howard 4-17, (4)1B, R. . Chris Cork 6-16, (4)1B, 2B, HR, RBI, 2R. . Dustin Waldrop 6-16, (3)1B, 3HR, 5 RBI, 3R

WEST RALLIES FOR 7 IN THE SEVENTH TO WIN WORLD SERIES

August 22nd - The first ever chair baseball world series ended in dramatic fashion Sunday afternoon as the West rallied from behind late in the game to win 9-4 in front of a sold out Corklestick Park. They jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a solo homer by Patrick Cork but fell behind in the top of the 4th after Chris Cork and Dustin Waldrop solo shots. Two more unearned runs crossed the plate in the inning to give the East a 4-2 lead after 4 innings. The score remained 4-2 into the bottom of the 7th inning when the Western bats caught fire. A single by Tony Cork off of Dustin Waldrop preceeded a two-run homerun by Patrick Cork that tied the game with just one out in the inning. Three straight singles followed to load the bases for Tony Cork. Cork grounded one down the third base line and the throw just missed and the West had regained the lead at 5-4. The very next hitter, Patrick Cork, drove a deep drive to left center field that just fell past Chris Cork's outstretched glove for a Grand Slam that gave the West a 9-4 lead. Patrick Cork pitched a scoreless 8th and 9th to secure the lead and the Series win for the West. Tony Cork pitched 7 tough innings allowing 4 runs (2 earned) to pick up the win. Greg Howard threw 5 innings allowing 2 runs but picked up a no decision. Waldrop was touched for the 7 runs in the 7th which were the only runs he gave up in his three innings of work. Patrick finished Game 6 with a 6-for-14 day including 4 homeruns and 8 RBI.

EAST - Greg Howard 2-11, (2)1B, R . . Chris Cork 4-11, (2)1B, 3B, HR, 2RBI, 2R . . Dustin Waldrop 2-11, 2B, HR, 2RBI, R

The first ever Chair Baseball World Series was a huge success with all games being very competitive with nearly all being decided in the late innings. The West team of Tony Cork, Patrick Cork, and Ryan Tomlinson took the series 4-2 over the Eastern squad of Chris Cork, Greg Howard, Josh Williamson, and Dustin Waldrop.
